Interview with Dillon Danis /// By: Stephen Gomez
The IBJJF World Championships, ADCC, Abu Dhabi World Pro, Metamoris and Copo Podio. How many people can say they have competed on these stages? Competed at the highest level of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. With his unorthodox style of BJJ which incorporates wrestling and dynamic movements, Dillon Danis is one of the most entertaining and exciting competitors on the competition scene right now. Currently training with Marcelo Garcia in New York City, Dillon trains regularly with some of the top new black belts coming out of the east coast. He has also just currently won Double Gold at the New York Open.
I had the opportunity to sit down with him and discuss the upcoming Copo Podio tournament and a few other topics about him and his training:
Q: Since you’ve had some time to reflect on your past performance, what are your thoughts? Did you think you did as well as you wanted?
Dillon: I was happy with my performance but not the results. I felt like I left everything I had out there, but next it needs to be more.
Q: During the tournament you dislocated your elbow, how is the recovery process coming along ?
Dillon: My elbow is recovering with hard work in rehab but there's no time to baby injures, i have a lot I need to accomplish.
Q: Have you changed anything up in your training for the upcoming tournament? Any Specialized training?
Dillon: No, nothing changes. Always consistent, true hard work and sacrifice. There are no secret to this game, just put in the hours mentally and physically.
Q: Is there a particular competitor that you’re looking forward to competing against?
Dillon: There is never a opponent, they are all the same.
Q: You’re known for having a very dynamic and explosive style of Jiu-Jitsu, what do you attribute that too?
Dillon: My style is like no other. I have trained with various styles my whole life so I am unpredictable and comfortable in any position or situation.
Q: What are you goals for the rest of the year? Anything big planned?
Dillon: My dream since I was 15 years old becoming Gi Black Belt World Champion, and I will do everything in my power to do so.
Q: Any else you would like to add?
Dillon: Thanks to my team, sponsors and family.
